Cooper's HawkThe Cooper’s Hawk is a specialized hunter that concentrates on birds such as doves, pigeons, and sparrows. This hawk’s body is uniquely adapted to pursue its prey through thick branches. It has shorter, rounder wings and a longer tail to assist with greater agility. This high speed pursuit amongst the trees comes at a price. Nearly 1 out of 4 birds have old, healed fractures to bones in the chest and wings. Lastly, the young look quite different from the adults. As shown in these two photos, their pale eyes gradually turn bright orange and their brown-streaked chest molts into an attractive, rust-colored pattern.
