The outskirts of the Valley are seeing development in just about every direction these days as demand for housing continues to grow and more people move here from all over the country.

Artist Alejandro T. Acierto has been documenting some of that development, but not from the point of view of the housing market. Instead, the Arizona State University professor has been watching how it affects the seemingly empty land around it.

From burrowing owls to prairie dogs and mice, Acierto has chronicled the displacement of the natural world — and raises questions about what we value in the process.

It’s all the subject of his new exhibition at ArtSpace West at ASU’s West campus called “Uninvited Guests.” The Show spoke with him about it.
