On 2/17/22, Wild At Heart rescued a female Great Horned Owl from Mayo Clinic in Phoenix near a building under construction. We learned that this female and her mate built their nest in the building’s insulation. When construction crews arrived one morning, she became spooked. In her attempt to flee, she ran into a wall.

We named her ‘Carfi’ because the McCarthy Construction team was kind enough to alert us and ultimately saved her life and the nest full of unhatched babies. Carfi was bruised and had injured both of her eyes. She needed rest, special eye medications, anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce the swelling, and a safe place to heal.

The new medical building was completed during the next six weeks, and Carfi’s eyes healed. Next, we moved Carfi from the XX to an outside aviary to allow her to stretch her wings and keep her in good flying condition. Before releasing Carfi back into the wild, a Wild At Heart volunteer, Val Motyka, provided and installed two artificial nesting sites behind the new Mayo building. These artificial nests are located in safer areas for Carfi to meet up with her mate and try to raise a family again. Carfi’s release was on April 1st, no fooling!
