EaGr 2As a slightly different Feathered Fact this week, we introduce yesterday’s rescue:  An Eared Grebe.  Grebes are strictly water birds built for swimming.  Their legs are located near the rear of their bodies.  This is excellent for swimming underwater but quite useless for walking on land.  The fact is, grebes cannot walk on land and can take flight only after flapping and running along the surface of the water to gain enough speed.  Consequently, when this bird flew into a window, it was literally grounded until a caring person called us for help.  Every autumn, grebes crash-land onto dark, wet asphalt that looks like a lake and then become marooned on land until someone provides help.
